December 12, 2019

Description

Shouldice Hospital’s website mainly discusses the advantages of natural tissue hernia repair versus mesh hernia repair. Currently, they are the only hospital in the world specifically licensed for repairing hernias. Their site also cover the different techniques (laparoscopic vs open) in mesh repair and the different types of hernias.

Overview

On the main page, viewers can click on “Hernias Explained” to learn more about the different types of hernias. They cover an array of topics including the symptoms of a hernia, how a hernia is diagnosed, whether surgery is needed to repair a hernia, and how hernias are repaired.

Common Types of Hernias

Visitors can learn about the most common types of external abdominal wall hernias on Shouldice Hospital’s website. The most common are indirect inguinal hernia, direct inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, femoral hernia, epigastric hernia, and incisional hernia. The information is displayed in short, educational videos that are under 2 minutes long.

Different Hernia Removal Techniques

The Shouldice site explains the different types of hernia removal surgeries on their site as well as the differences between laparoscopic techniques and open repairs. For example, laparoscopic techniques can be difficult to perform and few surgeons are able to master it. Also, the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that the open technique is superior to the laparoscopic technique for mesh repair.
